Jacksonville Jaguars eye linebacker trade to shore up defense before camp

The Jacksonville Jaguars are exploring ways to strengthen their linebacker group ahead of training camp.

What’s the latest on the Jaguars’ linebacker plans?

One NFL analyst is pushing the Jaguars to add a linebacker via trade. Moe Moton of Bleacher Report proposed Jacksonville send a late 2027 draft pick to Miami for linebacker Tyrel Dodson.

Who is Tyrel Dodson?

Dodson has started for three teams in four seasons. He logged 129 tackles (10 for loss), five sacks, three pass breakups and an interception in 2025. Miami may not re-sign him when his expiring contract ends amid a rebuild.

Why does this matter for the Jaguars?

Devin Lloyd left in free agency, leaving a hole next to Foye Oluokun. The Jaguars still have options: Ventrell Miller is the presumed starter, Branson Combs could push for snaps, and fourth-round 2025 pick Jack Kiser is in the mix. Linebackers coach Tem Lukabu said filling Lloyd’s void will be a group effort.

Could the Jaguars actually pull the trigger?

Jacksonville has multiple 2027 picks and James Gladstone has shown a willingness to trade. Still, the team is betting on its current group. That’s why the front office didn’t chase a linebacker in free agency or the draft.

The Jaguars sit 3rd in the American Football Conference at 13-4 and have won eight straight. They open against Cleveland on September 13, 2026.
